Stay calm–and think of November

FhsvtKzZQcuXBwTo+%DxVA

To stay “calm” does not mean to be complacent. It means to do the right thing: wash your hands regularly and to maintain social distance. Why is it so difficult for some folks to figure this out? Something very frightening occurred to me last night after watching a YouTube vid on the state of affairs in Italy. The video first showed a crowded hospital with doctors and nurses moving frantically from patient to patient, and then it showed a convoy of military vehicles rolling down a city street under the cover of darkness. They were, according to the speaker, full of bodies headed to a burial site.

It occurred to me that when it really turns nasty here in the states, which it will soon do, we might well see the same sort of thing. Sadako and I are not going out. If I, who am 71 years old, contract the virus, the last my wife may ever see of me is my being carted off in an orange and white ambulance.

Therefore the only going out I do is to walk Cody, our black lab, (above). I asked Sadako, who is Japanese, to not accompany me when I walk Cody. Why? Because our abject, ignorant, vile president refuses to stop using the phrase, “Chinese virus.” His base, a large number of whom live here in Alabama, are beginning to associate Coronavirus with Asian. Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, they’re all the same to Trump and his base. Hate crimes against Asians are now occurring in this country.

The fact that “We are all in this together” does not resonate with Trump nor with some senators. Senator Burr of NC comes to mind. He sold $1.7 million of stock upon early information from his Senate Intelligence Committee briefing on the coming pandemic. Burr didn’t jump up and say, “Wait, we must immediately prepare our people.” He didn’t rise up before his beloved president and declare, “We need tests, dammit.” He made no effort to purchase PPEs for hospitals in NC or anywhere else. That wasn’t his concern.

He could have admitted that he had sold those shares and donated that money to the production and effective delivery of face masks, gowns, gloves, and respirators to the hospitals of New York, but he didn’t. No, Mr. Burr PROFITTED, as did Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California, who is also a member of the Intelligence Committee; James M. Inhofe, Republican of Oklahoma; and Kelly Loeffler, Republican of Georgia. All four should be investigated rigorously–after being discharged from their duties as United States Senators.

So, yes, I do wake up in the middle of the night and feel some anxiety.

I feel for you, Paul – not just due to your age, due to your wife’s situation, and everything else – I feel for you as I feel for the millions of hardworking, patriotic Americans who did believe this president would do what he set out to do – to make things better for people that thought they weren’t better off. Now they’re discovering just how right the “fake news” was and is. My own husband is in this boat, and while he won’t use the word (mostly he won’t think of it), I know he considers this a betrayal. I’ve said from the get-go the orange menace was nothing but a monster, and if you voted for him, it’ll rain down on your heads later. In such instances as what we’re facing now, I hate to be right.

Take care of yourselves down there. Train Cody to attack racists. Call it self-defense, and cite the Constitution. Even plenty of Southern judges would stand by that.

Thank you, Daley. I know what you mean. We all want to say “I told you so” but what’s the point?
Ha! I wish I could train Cody, but unfortunately he’s the friendliest dog down here. Cody! On the other hand, Tora, our cat is a real meanie. Maybe I can train him! 🙂
Thanks again for the wonderful reply.

Agreed. Unfortunately, even as this is all unfolding, there are plenty who still bow to T. Rump – which only adds to the crisis IMHO.
I don’t feel impotent, however, as I know my ‘staying home’ is a big deal and makes a difference, no matter how small it seems.
    Hang in there.

How right you are. Staying home is an act of goodness, a literal statement that says, “I care.”
A message that is foreign to T-rump and his sycophants.

Sadly, so many people are idiots. We’re dealing with a medical crisis and there’s no room for racists or even politics right now. Kindness, empathy and common decency would go a long way in helping us all cope. Please stay safe and well!

So very true. As it has happened in the past, fear does terrible things to people. We can only hope that as a nation we can hold a modicum of sanity in place.
Thank you for the kiind words.

This was one of the … real-est blogs I’ve read in some time. The anti-Asian sentiment will eventually die down, just tell your wife to hunker down. I live in Rome, and the two Chinese shops in the area (one all purpose, one dry cleaner) closed down before they were obliged to. I think it just might be for the same reason. Anyway, if you stay indoors you’ll be ok. I go round the block every day and am trying to get into some kind of gym routine yuck. I’m your age…

Thank you Bea! Yeah, I’m in for the duration. I walk Cody twice a day and do a lot of reading, which is great. You’re in Rome! I visited–a group tour–in 2010. I loved it. I’m glad to hear you’re doing well. You guys are getting hit so damn hard. Us seventy-oners gotta hang in there!

Paul, miserable state of affairs. My heart goes out to you and Sadako and so many countless others. Yes, we are all in this together– for better, for worse…and for the eventual recovery, however long and tough that is…and as you note, we all can so our part, it requires patience and compassion and simple action.
I love your photo and am glad you have such lovey creatures there with you. Small comforts matter so much, and never more than now. I am still walking in the woods out here as it is quite easy to avoid or significantly distance from others, but that may cease if/when all of OR. goes on lock down. But we still have the mighty trees, the skies, birds singing and feeding, mountain views and more from our large balcony on a high hill. I can sit at our table there, breathe the sweet air and read and write.
I hold on to what is good and true and seek courage in my faith in Divine Love, one moment at a time. I know you and your wife will do the same or what is right for you.
Anyway. My best to you. Keep writing, Paul; I will keep reading.

Thank you Cynthia. It’s so good to hear from you. The northeast has taken the brunt of the virus storm. I’m so glad to hear you’re okay. And you are exactly right. The trees, the grass, the birds, hey, they won’t hurt us. I think we who are outside the large urban areas are fortunate with our space. I’m at the point where I don’t miss going out.
      Take care dear friend.

ouch, I feel your raw pain here Paul … I am so sorry that your wife has to suffer this! She too deserves to stroll out in fresh air daily!

As for those monsters who profited from insider information, our news says Burr is being investigated … monsters are only lining their own pockets. None of our politicians are stepping up as real leaders so we need to make them more accountable. Anxiety suppresses your immune system so please distract yourself in any way possible, read, music, positive thoughts, dancing to give your poor wife some exercise.

Eventually we will all die some way but being part of a mass burial carted away by tanks … nobody wants that!

This is such a heartfelt post. I guess most people in the world are experiencing this anxiety but they don’t have the words to express themselves. I hope after reading this, they realize they are not alone and infuse themselves with bright rays of hope for a better future! 🌸

Hello Paul. I love the two furry family members on the couch. As you may know I have a couple of furry family members also. It is so bigoted that people are targeting Asians about the Covid-19 virus as they have proven that most of the infections in the US come from a strain from Europe, even the UK. You know the place tRump did not ban because he had businesses there. I am glad to have time to visit your blog and will look it over soon as I get more time. I wish you and your family the very best. If you want you can send me lots of pictures of your furry family members, yes I admit I love to see pictures of them. Stay safe and be happy. Hugs

Hello Paul. I hope you and Sadako are well. This post was written in March. It was the tip of the iceberg. Sadly we are in August and nothing’s changed. Italy was replicated in the UK and the US. Thankfully things have gone back to normal in Europe so there’s hope.
A lot of the rich have become richer as a result of the pandemic but had no idea about the ones you’ve mentioned here. Thought it was the Chinese who reaped big but looks like there were betrayers inside too. Thank you for sharing this. Stay safe and take care.
